Getting ready to Race for Water!
High profile national events, championing international campaigning moments and lobbying at the core of government are just some recent highlights from End Water Poverty in Nepal.
Over 3000 people participated in a candlelight memorial at the holy 'Monkey Temple' in Kathmandu for World Water Day. The event was attended by Kollywood actress Jharana Thapa and Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang, who backed powerful advocacy messages on the right to water and sanitation.
On 29th May 2009 in Mahabaudha, Kathmandu, a collaborative event ‘Race for Water’ was steered by organisations such as the NGO Forum for Urban Water and Sanitation and the Nepal Red Cross Society. Constitution Assembly Member Mr. Nabindra Raj Joshi gave a speech of support to the campaign, and expressed that the moral message of water and sanitation should now be a political concern and priority. The people had spoken with public events – and politicians were under pressure to take action.
Through engaging with politicians and mobilising the public on water and sanitation, the End Water Poverty campaign in Nepal hopes to enshrine the right to water and sanitation into the national constitution. Their tactics of using a global campaign, working in collaboration and streamlining national priorities into messaging is a winning combination in achieving objectives.
