End Water Poverty in 2010

The coalition pushes for global change, with the first High-Level Meeting, and opportunities for lobbying at the G8, AU and MDG Summits

Water, sanitation and hygiene education are key building blocks for development, yet the

international effort on water and sanitation is in disarray
Water, sanitation and hygiene education are key
building blocks for development.
 Yet the
international effort on water and sanitation is in
disarray...

2010 is an important year for the End Water Poverty coalition, and as we move into 2011 and our fourth year of campaigning, we look to build on the successful steps taken so far. Through campaigning and lobbying we are making sure leaders understand that access to sanitation and water are key building blocks of development, providing the basis for life, dignity and prosperity.

What are we campaigning for?
End Water Poverty is calling on governments to support Sanitation and Water for All: a Global Framework for Action. This framework will provide an agreement in which:

  • Governments in developing countries create credible national plans to provide sanitation and water for all, and invest more in their implementation.
  • Governments in donor countries support the development of these plans, and ensure that no credible national plan fails for lack of finance
  • International systems are developed to monitor and drive progress in the sector, including specifically a global task force, an annual review and an annual global high-level meeting.

How can your organisation or group support the campaign?
To mobilize support for Sanitation and Water for All, we are calling on members to promote key international campaign activities in 2010/11, with 4 critical dates to note.

Key actions to take in 2010/11:

  • 22 March 2010: Join the World's Longest Toilet Queue with campaigners around the world by queuing to tell politicians that 2.5 billion people can't wait any longer for a safe toilet. Organise a queue and tell politicians attending the first ever High-Level Meeting on Water and Sanitation that they must act now.
  • Throughout 2010/11: Promote the End Water Poverty petition
Mobilise mass support for the national and international calls with petitions aimed at your government.
  • June/July: Give your leader a send-off before the G8 and AU Summits
If your leader is attending the G8 or African Union Summits at the start of July, make sure they become sanitation champions with their fellow leaders.

    queue
Campaigners queue outside the Japanese Embassy in
London befor the G8 Summit, July 2008.

  • 20-22 September 2010: Make a noise at the MDG Summit in New York We need to make sure the world knows that it must commit more funds and greater resources to beating the water and sanitation crisis.
  • 19 November: Stand up for sanitation on World Toilet Day Highlight the critical role that toilets play in providing life and dignity to people all over the world.

We will also be contacting high-profile figures to act as Goodwill Ambassadors for the campaign. Please get in touch if you are able to support this effort.

Briefings on individual events and resources you can use will be available throughout the year.
