There is a global crisis in water and sanitation, over one billion people in the world do not have access to safe water, and over two and a half billion people live without adequate sanitation. As a result 5,000 children will die today from water-related diseases; the second biggest killer of children in the world.
Germany will host this year's G8 summit of world leaders, the German Chancellor; Angela Merkel must have poverty on the agenda and commit the G8 leaders to a Global Action Plan for delivering water and sanitation to the poorest people in the world. Ignoring this global crisis is no longer an option!
"In the UK, we're kicking off the campaign by lobbying outside the German Embassy in London, End Water Poverty campaigners are queuing up with empty buckets and demanding that the Germans do everything in their power to tackle the global water and sanitation crisis," said WaterAid Campaign Manager Jennean Alkadiri.
