5000 children die every day from drinking dirty water.

Breakthrough in Bangladesh

Confirmation that Bangladesh has broken the half-million mark

 The Daily Star

End Water Poverty campaigners in Dhaka have now collected more than 500,000 signatures - an incredible achievement which demonstrates how the people of Bangladesh are firmly behind the campaign.

The demands of the campaign are targeted at the G8 leaders, who will next meet in Japan in 2008, and include three simple demands:

  • That the G8 must commit to a global action plan for sanitation and water to ensure services for the world's poorest people

  • That without sanitation and water, the world's poorest communities are trapped in the stranglehold of poverty and disease

  • That if the G8 are serious about development, then they must act now

The first phase of the End Water Poverty Campaign in Bangladesh has now been successfully completed, thanks to the participation of the coalition partners and the support of the Bangladeshi people, which has been remarkable.

However, there is still a long way to go. We need to increase and maximise our efforts in order to ensure that the campaign continues to create awareness and build pressure on the international community, as well as the government of Bangladesh, to introduce policies that will ensure justice and equity in terms of water supply and sanitation to the people.
