End Water Poverty 2022 general assembly

Save the date: End Water Poverty will hold its biennial general assembly on Tuesday 27 September at 12-3pm (UTC). The assembly will be a great opportunity for members to unite, share ideas, and shape our coalition’s future. French and Spanish translation will be available. We will share the meeting agenda as well as a registration link in our next newsletter.

Reminder: call for Claim Your Water Rights concept notes

Our members continue to demonstrate that community-led campaigns can be highly efficient and effective. In our previous newsletter we opened calls for Claim Your Water Rights concept notes to all End Water Poverty members. The deadline for submission is Monday 11 July. To apply for a mini-grant of £1,000-£5,000, please carefully read our granting guidelines before downloading and completing our concept note form. To ensure funds are distributed fairly among regional constituencies, we will provide a maximum of two grants per country so submitting joint concept notes with other members in your country or region could strengthen your chances of receiving funding. Don’t worry if you need more time to formulate plans – we will open calls again in October.

UN 2023 Water Conference

End Water Poverty recently met with Butterfly Effect, European Pact for Water, ONGAWA and the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Safe Water and Sanitation to discuss meaningful civil society participation at the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York.

Members who wish to attend in person have until 15 July to apply for special accreditation – please note that ECOSOC members need not apply. Members who cannot travel to New York can still get involved by lobbying governments to submit commitments to the Water Action Agenda. End Water Poverty will also join partners in advocating for a civil society dialogue and a permanent UN mechanism for water and sanitation. In preparation for the conference, we will co-host a session at Stockholm World Water Week to amplify the demands of marginalised groups with the Special Rapporteur, Simavi, KEWASNET and the Rural Water Supply Network. More details to follow in the coming months.

Submitting claims to the Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women raises awareness of human rights violations against women anywhere in the world. Individuals or organisations can submit complaints, appeals or petitions to inform confidential reports and presentations to governments. Claims must be submitted by 1 August.

Welcoming Population & Development Initiative

We are pleased to welcome Population & Development Initiative (PDI) from Kigoma, Tanzania, to our coalition. PDI provide information, resources and tools for fishing and mining communities to advocate for their rights to water and a safe environment. They most recently worked with the Responsible Mining Foundation to develop a Mining Site Assessment Tool, which gathers data on water pollution, labour conditions and complaints mechanisms among mining communities in Geita.
